A Study on the Primary Health Care Need of An Island

Abstract
|
|
|
In order to investigate primary health care need among inhabitants in island, this survey was conducted during Feb. 1827, 1980. The Population surveyed was 3,780 inhabitants living in 612 households in an island located in Chonnam Province.
The result could be summarized as follows:
1) In demographic backgrounds, the old was tended more(7.7%) and average number of households was 9.3, most of the inhabitants(71.4%) was engaged in agriculture.
2) In household environmental sanitation, the deficit of drinking water and latrine facility and their too close location was pointed health problem primarily.
3) Maternal health was threatened by considerable pregnancy wastage’s (prematurity, abortion, stillbirth etc.) poor postpartal care and ignorance of health knowledge about MCH, & F-P.
4) Health problems experienced such as G-I conditions, wounds was affiliated within primary health care level mostly(83.8%).
5) Participation of householder (72.2 %) and his wife(54.4%) in community cooperation program was positive relatively and the majority of decision makers in family was householder (69.6% ).
6) Specific leisure time was not allocated to the inhabitants especially to the housewives.
7) In possessing household-appliances, electric appliances such as TV, (65.6%) radio(76.8%) were more than necessaries of island life such as sewing machine, (42.8%) bicycles(31.9 % ).
8) Community health problems pointed by interviewee were poverty(l St), diseases of household(2nd) and by interviewer were indifference & lack of health knowledge(l St), poor in personal hygiene(2nd) and household environmental sanitation & nutrition was chosen in both group within 5th priority. And expected community programs pointed by interviewee such as establishment of health center, drugstore were mostly needed governmental support.
